Official application fees

IP Australia charges trade mark fees per class. As published by IP Australia in November 2026, online application fees are:

ApplicationFee per class
Standard application using the picklist$250
Standard application with your own wording$400
Headstart: assessment fee, then submission fee$200 + $130
Adding a class after filing$450

Fees change from time to time. Always check IP Australia’s current fee schedule before you file.

A worked example

A coffee roaster wants to protect its name for roasted coffee (class 30) and online retail of coffee (class 35). Both descriptions are on the picklist.

2 classes × $250 = $500 in official application fees.

Write custom descriptions for the same two classes and the figure becomes $800. Realise after filing that the café also needs class 43, and adding it costs $450.

Where the real cost is

The official fee is rarely the expensive part. The costs that hurt are the ones that come after a problem: responding to an examination report, defending an opposition, or rebranding after launch because the name was never cleared.

  • Pick the right classes up front, so you are not paying to add one later.
  • Use the picklist where it genuinely describes what you sell.
  • Search before you file, so the fee buys a registration rather than a refusal.
